I have been using the Philips HD Media Player HMP3000/98 for almost an year now. And I must say it was one hell of a good decision to buy it. A brief about my setup. I have a Panasonic TH-P42X50D 42″ Plasma TV (HD Ready, i.e. not full HD). I have connected my Creative Inspire 2.1 2400 speakers to the TV. The media player is connected to the TV via HDMI. I do NOT have a cable/satellite connection, so the media player is the sole input for my TV. I have two 2.5″ hard discs (160 GB and 500 GB) which I connect to the media player via the USB 2.0 port. The media player has only one USB port so I have a switch between the hard discs.

As advertised in the manual the media player supports formats Video: MPEG 1/2/4(MPEG 4 Part 2), H.264, VC-1, H.263, VP6(640 x 480), DivX Plus HD, DivX 3/4/5/6, Xvid, RMVB 8/9/10, RM, WMV (V9), AVI, TS, M2TS, TP, TRP, ISO, VOB, DAT, MP4, MPEG, MPG, MOV (MPEG 4, H.264), ASF, FLV(640 x 480), MKV, M4V. Audio: Dolby digital, AAC, RA, OGG, MKA, MP3, WAV, APE, FLAC, DTS, LPCM, PCM, WMA (V9), IMP/MS ADPCM, WMA Pro. Picture: JPEG, JPG, M-JPEG, PNG, TIF, TIFF, GIF (unanimated GIF), BMP, HD JPEG. And this claim is very true. The media player plays almost every file which I have. From among a 1000 files there are hardly 5 files which the media player has not been able to play. The video quality is simply superb. The quality of rendering on the TV is better than the quality I get when playing the movie on my laptop using VLC.

I am also a big fan of lossless music, and this media player plays all formats of lossless music (APE, FLAC). The audio quality is also very good.

The media player has a useful feature of ‘Night Mode’ which when switched helps in listening to dialogues even at low volume.

The user interface is also very fast and user friendly.

    support long subtitles with 2 lines or 3 lines without lost words?

    1. Yes most of the subtitle operations are supported, there is a completely separate subtitle menu. So all the operations which you mention are supported. You can also choose between multiple subtitles, adjust screen placement, change font etc… The subtitles are displayed in multiple lines, so words are not lost.

  3. Hi Mr Kuldep
    i was bought hmp3000/98
    Did u know how to change font default without to have change font every time i play movie?
    2) it frustrating to click many step to open movies. Did u know (if any way) to play movies automatically (autoplay) like asus o mini play player can do?

    1. I always watch movies with English subtitles so haven’t tried to change the default. But in the setup option (from main screen) there is an option to change subtitles. Maybe that is what you want.

      I agree that it takes many clicks to play any movie. But I am not aware of any other way or shortcut for auto play. Sorry for that.

    I’m considering the aquisition of one HMP3000, but still I have one doubt.
    It does suport subtitles with a MP4 movie?

    Of course, taking care of the default rules of same folder and file name, e.g. movie.srt with movie.mp4

    1. Yes, it supports subtitles for MP4 file, both inbuilt as well as a separate .srt file with same name in same folder.

  5. Can I use this media player on old CRT TV because I see there i AV port. And can I play with that type od connection HD movies

    1. Yes you can use it with CRT tv. But the connector for video is the single composite video connector and not the three channel r g b connector. Even though you would be able to watch HD movies, you will be limited by the resolution supported by the the single connector when compared to the three channel connector.

  7. Hi, from what I read above, it seems to support RCA connection.

    However, I have checked numerous images of the player and found nothing that could verify the connection: 9V Adapter, HDMI, Optical.

    And the last one is the ‘AV’ connection. I believe this is more like a headphone (audio)/camera (video) connection, rather than an RCA connection.

    So, my question is: Have you tried setting it up with just the yellow composite for the video signal?
